"Some Highlights"

By Gerry M. Kaye

Few politicians on the present political scene have the natural political debating skills that Alan Keyes displayed in Thursday's debate for the Illinois Senate seat. Smooth and unflawed, his answers to Barack Obama's typical and tiresome rhetorical attacks on conservatives were stunning, and most of all, refreshingly accurate.

It's the best debate in this 2004 campaign yet seen, and the Republican Party really has a rising star of enormous potential, if they can get around the media's biased attacks and misrepresentation of Keyes' character. This debate ( Oct. 21, 2004 ) is a blockbuster win for Alan Keyes.

The second of three Illinois Senate debates between Alan Keyes and Barack Obama centered on faith and morals on topics including abortion, gun control and gay rights.

Keyes said Christians committed to their faith should vote for him because of Obama's weak stand on issues such as abortion.

"I stand for the defense of innocent life. I stand for the defense of traditional marriage," Keyes said. "I do not say that homosexual relations are an abomination: the Bible says so," Keyes said.

Keyes is against abortion in all cases except to save the mother's life. Obama supports abortion rights. Both are against gay marriage, although Obama is for civil unions.

Obama claims his Christian religion is well served by him. Keyes disagrees, saying that he can't have it both ways especially regarding the issue of abortion v. pro-life.

On gun laws, Obama said Keyes was against "common-sense" laws like the assault weapons ban, while Keyes said Obama would arm criminals and leave law-abiding citizens defenseless.

Keyes questioned Obama for voting against a bill that would impose the death penalty for certain gang killings. Obama said the gang proposal was already covered under state death penalty laws.

Keyes asked Obama why he is for "age appropriate" sex education even in kindergarten, something he often highlights on the campaign trail. Obama said the type of health education he supports is, for example, warning young children about inappropriate touching. Keyes said that talking sex education, especially at that early an age is no business of government.

The candidates are running for the seat held by retiring GOP Sen. Peter Fitzgerald.
